Ammonia Refrigeration Systems
Wednesday, September 12th, 2007When it comes to ammonia refrigeration there are many details that many people are unaware of. For example many industrial facilities use ammonia in their refrigeration. This includes industrial refrigeration companies that store all kinds of products. Things like breweries and wineries, fish processing plants, meat and poultry processing plants, soft drink, fruit juice and vegetable juice processors, dairy and ice cream, other types of food processing plants, cold storage warehouses, on board ship processing, petrochemicals, and many other processing plants. The refrigeration systems that use ammonia with more than 10,000 pounds are covered by the Process Safety Management Standard. There are many hazards associated with maintaining and operating an ammonia refrigeration system. As a result all companies using ammonia refrigeration need to have modules for emergency response as well as ammonia receiving and storage. Other safety modules needed include piping and pressure vessels, condenser area, refrigeration spaces, as well as the machine room. This is the basic information necessary to gain an understanding of ammonia refrigeration. The release of ammonia can be very dangerous, however if safety modules are in place then operating and maintaining an ammonia refrigeration system should be no problem.
